By using embedded wire, string, and reed between sheets of high shrinkage abaca the paper has a structural form for building. After creating the embedded paper the first day, students will return to the studio on day two to find the paper magically transformed and will learn ways to further manipulate the dry sheets into forms ranging from lamps and lanterns to low-relief and three-dimensional sculptural objects. This workshop will serve as an introduction to basic principles of letterpress printing and the Vandercook proof press. Using vintage wood type from the Repeat Press collection, students will learn the proper procedures for setting and printing their own broadside posters.
Mike Dacey has been running Repeat Press since 2003, working in both contemporary custom letterpress printing and traditional letterpress with moveable type. Mike's work with wood type can be seen on the numerous band and event posters he has produced, as well as his personal artwork.
No experience necessary. This class is a fundraiser to improve the letterpress studio for advanced classes.
